Info

The Yeraltı Mosque is surprising and unconventional mosque hidden in the subsoil of Istanbul. It was originally the basement cellar of a Byzantine fortress. After the conquest of Constantinople in 1453, this cellar was used as a storage for ammunition and as a water cistern. The Ottoman vizier, Köse Bahir Mustafa Pasha, converted it into a mosque in 1753, and, at the request of a Naqshbandi dervish added memorial cenotaphs for three holy men. The 1754 Istanbul earthquake destroyed the structure, but it was rebuilt under the Ottoman Sultan Mahmud I in 1756. It contains the following memorials tombs:

  • Two wooden cenotaphs are dedicated to the Sahaba Amr ibn al-As and another Sahaba named Wahb ibn Husayra. Amr ibn al-As is known to have passed away in Egypt, while there is little to no record of any Sahaba named Wahb ibn Husayra.
  • In the middle of the mosque, there is a room containing a cenotaph dedicated to Sufyan ibn ‘Uyaynah, a prominent Tabi’ al-Tabi’in, who is known to have passed away in Makka al-Mukarrama.
