Publishing info:
"In the Shade of the Levant” is a collection of thirty-one poems on Syria and the Syrian people; they were written over the span of thirty-five years between 1980-2015. As a Syrian living in Syria and then having to leave Syria, Shaykh Muhammad Al-Yaqoubi describes his country, how it was and how it is, making his words a vessel not only to his own feelings, but to the feelings of the Syrian people and their on-going suffering under the Assad regime for forty years. The poems of “In the Shade of the Levant” present a series of unique and original sketches that trace the illuminated and radiant past of Syria and its capital Damascus through to the present state of discord in sharp contrast as witnessed and experienced in the author’s own lifetime.
In each of the twenty-eight poems dedicated to Syria, Shaykh Muhammad Al-Yaqoubi, a Syrian scholar raised in one of the foremost households of knowledge, piety, and poetic brilliance in the historic city of Damascus, transports the reader through the passage of time in words, describing, praising and eulogizing the virtues and glories of the Syrian people to the level that stirs yearning for it in its most critical period. "In the Shade of the Levant" is guaranteed to enchant the reader and mesmerize his or her mind. It will bring Syria to you, making you feel its cool breeze from the old spring days and the pain its people endure today.

From Shaykh Muhammad al-Yaqoubi FB page 31 December 2015
No Mercy that Allah has sent or will send,
none that may ascend; descend or transcend
In the realm of Allah or in His Sovereignty,
Whether it is specific or comes in totality,
Except that Taha , His Servant, the elect,
His Prophet, the Preferred whom he verily has sent
Is certainly the means of it as well as a source,
A fact that every man through reason can course.
So beseech him always for everything you need,
For he is the Shafi’ who accepts all who plead.
Take shelter in Him from all distress,
For safety is he always as well as fortress.
Put down the loads of hope at him there;
He is the refuge the one who will bear
In a state of hardship when calamities befall,
Do not despair and upon him call
O most Esteemed of what Allah did create,
And the best by whom to Him we supplicate.
How many a time you removed grave grief,
And this is what afflicted me again, in brief.
More helpless than me none did ever exist:
What strength do I have or stamina to persist?
By him who made you in the world sublime
And raised you to a rank no one can climb
Disencumber me of all hardships and pain;
Whom do I solicit if you desist or refrain?
At loss am I ; my patience is gone.
I have not a clue of what next is to be done
You are the door to Allah; whoever finds a way
to travel without you will surely be turned away.
Prayers on you as the winds of the north
Swiftly shake hand with the flowers that come forth
With Salam from Allah as the scent of the Houses
Smells sweet, and the fragrance of incense arises
With the Family, the companions so long as a pigeon
Whose twig is succulent coos loudly in the region.

I all barmhärtighet den Barmhärtige
den som Han gjort till källa och till kanal;
han är ett ombud som alltid tar emot;
Miracle
On one of the occasions when Sheikh Muhammad al-Tayyib (may Allah be pleased with him) was performing hajj, he was accompanied by the Sheikh and Reciter `Abd al-Rahim al-Dibs wa al-Zayt. Sheikh `Abd al-Rahim’s camel got lost, and with it an amount of money entrusted it to him by other people for conducting trade on their behalf. Sheikh `Abd al-Rahman was exasperated – he feared the people would accuse him of having wrongfully taken their money and means of subsistance. He went to Sheikh Muhammad al-Tayyib and told him what had happened, and the Sheikh supplicated for him with the following words: “May Allah give you something better in return”. However, Sheikh `Abd al-Rahim insisted that he supplicate ardently for him, saying: This is people’s money. Sheikh Muhammad al-Tayyib then felt sympathy for his situation, and turned towards Allah making tawassul by His Messenger – peace be upon him and his family – by reciting the famous qasida which begins with these lines:
“Ma arsala al-Rahmanu aw yursilu”
“No Mercy That Allah has sent or will send”
He then turned towards Sheikh `Abd al-Rahim and said to him: “You found your camel”, and within a very short while, two Arabs came and brought him the lost camel.

This new poetry collection, written by His Eminence Shaykh Muhammad al-Yaqoubi, is dedicated entirely to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, praising him, describing him and his character, on yearning to Madinah to visit him and expressing the immense love that the Shaykh has for him ﷺ. It will be the second poetry collection of the Shaykh Muhammad Al-Yaqoubi to be published, the first being “In the Shade of the Levant” which contains poems dedicated to Sham.
English
The English translation will come soon in shaa Allah.
The poem begins:
Greetings of the night of the Noble Birth
From a heart of one passionately in love with the Elect
The Love for the Prophet entered the precincts
of its breast in his youth, then stayed there ….
And the last line of it reads:
The mention of the beloved is the best nourishment
for a lover who fasted from turning to other than Him.

The Qutb al-Qutbab

The Qutb of all Qutbs
Dedicated to al-Imam Abul Hasan ash-Shadhili Radiya Allah ‘anhu
By Shaykh Muhammad al-Yaqoubi
This is a rough translation of the poem that I wrote yesterday (14th Aug.) on the way to the shrine of al-Imam Abul Hasan ash-Shadhili, may Allah be satisfied with him and may He allow us to benefit from his secrets and knowledge. The shrine is on the old hajj road in the southern part of Egypt five hour drive from Luxur through a town called Idfu. We were five – four people accompanied me from Cairo. When we were few hours away from the shrine, I found the words coming on my mouth so I jotted them down. When we arrived, I recited the poem before him in the blessed maqam where his presence was felt and it was overwhelming. I spent sometime making du’a for many people and I mentioned most of my student by name. The song in Arabic is written after the pattern of the famous song (ya imam rusli yaa sanadi).
Poem follows below…
The Qutb of all Qutbs throughout times is Abul Hasan ash-Shadhili; An Ocean of Secrets and an Imam of Guidance For whom the soul is the least price.
He led to the Master and climbed
in virtue to highest peaks
And brought in this discipline what
Made it more august than all branches.
Knowing Allah is his End,
So follow him through this path
And the Messenger of Allah is his Means
So, stick to his Sunnas.
The foundation of his way is built
On the Purification of the Heart from all stains So, journey with the Single Name O, You, Sufi! And seek assistance from Allah.
Be absent, and annihilate from all beings, as No one remains save he who is annihilated in Him; And enter the doors of the Unseen and ask Whatever you want, but guard the secrets
Drink the glass of Gnosis and taste
The Secret of Tawheed and be not
Make due the love for the men of Allah
And the love for the Imam of all of them Abul Hasan
Stick yourself to the pure thresholds
If you come to Humaithara, where is the home And in ‘Aydhaab stop and sink your cheeks in the soil And put your soul in the grave and a guarantee
Be thankful to Allah and pray on
Taha in secret and in public
And on Ahlul bayt all,
O friend and give salutations while you humble yourself
The son of al-Yaqoubi has come with
No claims, dressed only in the cloths of his coffin
So, turn to him O my master And to all of us with your bounties

Qasida Qutb al-Aqtab
Sayyidi al-Imam Abul Hasan al-Shadhili
anspråk, klädd i gravskrud –
O min Mästare, omfatta honom,
och oss alla, i Din välvilja.

Take the drink of love
It is indeed your medicine and cure
And walk through the way to be nearer
To the people of this Quarter
Be absent from all the universe
And fold in your absence the distance
Protect this secret from all
Save the people of this Quarter
Negate the other oh man!
And annihilate to all forms
Witness the transparency of wine
You will then enter this Quarter
Our words are divine gifts
Our silence is merely a cover
Our door is open for anyone
Who is heading for this Quarter
Our tastes are delicacies
Our secrets are attributed to the Essence
Our moves when we shake
May wake the dead in this Quarter
The Lord made us stand
At His Door for only a year
He then said, who is more entitled
other than you to this Quarter!
When we entered the house
And the cup went around
And all worries were removed
No one of us remained alive in that Quarter
Indeed all other than Him
Are perishing no doubt
There is not anyone there but Allah
Loved by the people of this Quarter
Witness His Unity
In the Unity of the Existence
And do not see existent beings
Other than Him but shadows
In the Hadith of the Shadow
There is indeed a secret that should not be averted
By Allah I swear
Nothing alongside Allah will ever last
See His Unity with no incarnation
And stand by at the remains
Act upon what I have said
To witness the beauty of the All-Living
And in the station of separation
He will bring you back to your senses after annihilation
As East is different from the West
As the dead is not like the living
This is the reality of Tawhid
A distinct unmatched meaning of it
There is no way but to grasp it
If you are heading to this Quarter

Qasida: Look at the birds in cages…

Bahariye Mevlevihanesi, Istanbul 3 Janary 2017
Video

Look at birds when they are in cages,
When their homelands are mentioned, they yearn to them.
The bird by singing, it relieves what is in its heart,
As a result of this, the members of it all shake.
The bird in yearning it dances in its cage,
Just missing that meeting in yearning,
So it makes all people listening to in just dance in ecstasy.
Such is the case of the souls of the lovers, o man.
Yearning and longing make them shake,
Yearning to the sublime love makes them shake.
Shall we force their souls, the souls of the lovers to have patience while they are yearning?
Can anyone who witnessed their meaning have patience?
Oh singer of yearning! Stand up and sing, and mention,
Sing us the name of the Beloved and comfort our souls.
And surrender to us and submit to us
Don’t object to us in what we claim,
Because whenever souls are in a state of rapture, we might divulge some secrets.
When we are good and our selves are good in a state of ecstasy,
And when the wine of love is mixed with us,
Then we remove the veils.
Do not blame any intoxicated lover in his state of intoxication.
Because the lover in a state of intoxication is not tasked.
