Abu Harb al-Hilali (r) narrates: I entered Madinah and went to the grave of the Prophet ﷺ; I visited him and sat at his feet, then a Bedouin came and visited and said, “O Best of Messengers! Indeed Allah has revealed to you a truthful book, in which He said:
﴿ وَلَوۡ أَنَّهُمۡ إِذ ظَّلَمُوۤا۟ أَنفُسَهُمۡ جَاۤءُوكَ فَٱسۡتَغۡفَرُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَٱسۡتَغۡفَرَ لَهُمُ ٱلرَّسُولُ
لَوَجَدُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ تَوَّابࣰا رَّحِیمࣰا ﴾
If they had only, when they were unjust to themselves, come to you and asked Allah’s forgiveness, and the Messenger had asked forgiveness for them, they would have found Allah indeed Oft-returning, Most Merciful. (Surat an-Nisaa, 4:64)
So indeed I have come to you seeking forgiveness for my sins, seeking your Intercession on my behalf for them.” Then he cried, and recited:
يَا خَيْرَ مَنْ دُفِنَتْ بِالْقَاعِ أَعْظُمُهُ *** فَطَابَ مِنْ طِيبِهِنَّ الْقَاعُ وَالأَكَمُ
نَفْسِي الْفِدَاءُ لِقَبْرٍ أَنْتَ سَاكِنُهُ *** فِيهِ الْعَفَافُ وَفِيهِ الْجُودُ وَالْكَرَمُ
Ya khayra man dufinat bi’l-qaa` a`azhamahu
fa-taaba man teebihinna alqaa`u wa ’l-akamu
O Best of those whose bones are buried in the deep Earth,
and from whose fragrance the depth and the height have become sweet!
nafsee’l-fidaa li-qabrin anta saakinuhu
feehi’l-`afaafu wa feehi’l-joodu wa’l-karamu
May I be the ransom for a grave that you inhabit,
and in which is found purity, bounty and munificence!
Then he asked for forgiveness and left. After that I fell asleep and saw the Prophet ﷺ in a dream and he said to me, “Find the man and give him glad tidings that Allah has forgiven him with my Intercession.” Then I awoke and left searching for him, but I could not find him. (Bayhaqi)

وَالْحِكَايَةَ الْمَشْهُورَةَ عَنْ العُتْبي، قَالَ: كُنْتُ جَالِسًا عِنْدَ قَبْرِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ، فَجَاءَ أَعْرَابِيٌّ فَقَالَ: السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ، سَمِعْتُ اللَّهَ يقول: ﴿وَلَوْ أَنَّهُمْ إِذْ ظَلَمُوا أَنْفُسَهُمْ جَاءُوكَ فَاسْتَغْفَرُوا اللَّهَ وَاسْتَغْفَرَ لَهُمُ الرَّسُولُ لَوَجَدُوا اللَّهَ تَوَّابًا رَحِيمًا﴾ وَقَدْ جِئْتُكَ مُسْتَغْفِرًا لِذَنْبِي مُسْتَشْفِعًا بِكَ إِلَى رَبِّي ثُمَّ أَنْشَأَ يَقُولُ:
يَا خيرَ مَنْ دُفنَت بِالْقَاعِ أعظُمُه * * * فَطَابَ منْ طِيبِهِنَّ القاعُ والأكَمُ
نَفْسي الفداءُ لقبرٍ أَنْتَ ساكنُه * * * فِيهِ العفافُ وَفِيهِ الجودُ والكرمُ
ثُمَّ انْصَرَفَ الْأَعْرَابِيُّ فَغَلَبَتْنِي عَيْنِي، فَرَأَيْتُ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ فِي النَّوْمِ فَقَالَ: يَا عُتْبى، الحقْ الْأَعْرَابِيَّ فَبَشِّرْهُ أَنَّ اللَّهَ قَدْ غَفَرَ له .
الحكاية هي قصة العتبي محمد بن عبد الله بن عمرو بن معاوية بن عمرو بن عتبة بن أبي سفيان، وقد ذكرها ابن عساكر في “تاريخه”، وابن الجوزي في “مثير العزم الساكن” كما عزاها لهما الحافظ ابن عبد الهادي -.وهذه الحكاية يرويها عن العتبي بلا إسناد وبعضهم يرويها عن محمد بن حرب الهلالي، وبعضهم يرويها عن محمد بن حرب عن أبي الحسن الزعفراني عن الأعرابي، وقد ذكرها البيهقي في كتاب “شعب الإيمان”
