Ramadan Has Arrived

رَمَضَانُ أَقْبَلَ بِالتُّقَىٰ وَالعَفْوِ *** فَاغْنَمْ سُوَيْعَاتِ الهُدَىٰ وَالصَّفْوِ
Ramadan has arrived with piety and forgiveness,
so take advantage of the hours of guidance and purity

وَانْوِ المَتَابَ عَنِ الذُّنُوبِ بِأَسْرِهَا *** فَاللهُ يَجْزِي عَبْدَهُ مَا يَنْوِي
And repent from your sins,
for Allah rewards His servants according to their intentions.

وَاحْذَرْ شَيَاطِينَ الأَنَامِ فَإِنَّهَا *** أَهْلَ التُّقَىٰ فِي كُلِّ وَقْتٍ تُغْوِي
Beware of the devils among mankind, for they are
the people of piety who tempt you at all times.

لَيْسَ المُرَادُ مِنَ الصِّيَامِ وَشَهْرِهِ *** جُوعًا وَلَا ظَمَأً بِحَرِّ الجَوِّ
The purpose of fasting and its month is not
hunger or thirst in the heat of the weather

كَلَّا وَلَمْ يُكْتَبْ عَلَيْكَ صِيَامُهُ *** كَيْمَا تَصِيرَ مِنَ الضَّنَىٰ كَالقِنْوِ
No, it is not written for you to fast so
that you become weak like a slave

وَلَعَلَّكُمْ﴾ قَدْ ﴿تَتَّقُونَ﴾ جَلَتْ لَنَا الْ‍‍‍ ‌‍*** ‍‌مَعْنَىٰ كَأَنْ قَدْ أُنْزِلَتْ لِلتَّوِّ)
(And perhaps you will be mindful)
The meaning has become clear to us,
as if it had just been revealed

تَرْكُ الطَّعَامِ وَسِيلَةٌ نَسْمُو بِهَا *** مِنْ عَالَمِ الشَّهَوَاتِ نَحْوَ العُلْوِ
Avoiding food is a means by which we ascend
from the world of desires towards the sublime.

صَوْمُ النُّفُوسِ عَنِ الرَّذَائِلِ وَالخَنَا *** فَرْضٌ، وَلَيْسَ بِهَيِّنٍ فِي الحَذْوِ
Fasting of the soul from vices and sins
is obligatory, and it is not easy to follow.

كَمْ صَائِمٍ، كَمْ قَائِمٍ، كَمْ مُنْفِقٍ *** قَدْ جَاءَ يَوْمَ الحَشْرِ صِفْرًا يُقْوِي
How many fast, how many pray, how many give charity?
The Day of Resurrection has come, and they are empty-handed.

ذَهَبَتْ عِبَادَتُهُ وَطَاعَتُهُ سُدًى *** لَمَّا اسْتَغَابَ صِحَابَهُ فِي زَهْوِ
Their worship and obedience were in vain
when their companions despised them in their pride.

مَثَلُ الَّذِي يَغْتَابُ حَالَ صِيَامِهِ *** مَثَلُ امْرِئٍ يَقْتَاتُ بَعْضَ النَّجْوِ
He who backbites while fasting is
like a man who eats some of his charity.

فَاحْفَظْ فُؤَادَكَ وَالجَوَارِحَ بَاطِنًا *** مِنْ كُلِّ مُوبِقَةٍ بِهَا قَدْ تَهْوِي
So guard your heart and your limbs
from everything that may cause you to fall.

وَاغْرِفْ مِنَ الأَعْمَالِ فِي رَمَضَانَ مَا *** يُدْنِي مِنَ الجَنَّاتِ بَعْضَ الخَطْوِ
And take from the deeds of Ramadan
what brings you closer to Paradise

وَاغْنَمْ لَيَالِيَهُ وَكُنْ مُتَخَشِّعًا *** وَرِعًا تُصَلِّي قَائِمًا لَا تَثْوِي
Take advantage of its nights and be humble
and pious, praying standing up without sitting down.

وَادْعُ الإِلَٰه وَنَاجِهِ مُتَضَرِّعًا *** وَإِلَىٰ سِوَىٰ رَبِّ الوَرَىٰ لَا تُلْوِي
Call upon Allah and supplicate to Him,
and do not turn away from the Lord of the Worlds.

وَاذْرِفْ دُمُوعَكَ بَاكِيًا فِي ذِلَّةٍ *** إِنَّ البُكَاءَ يُزِيلُ بَعْضَ الشَّجْوِ
Shed tears in humility,
for weeping removes some of the pain.

وَاسْجُدْ لِرَبِّكَ وَاقْتَرِبْ فَلَرُبَّمَا *** مِنْهُ مَسَافَاتِ النَّوَىٰ قَدْ تَطْوِي
And prostrate yourself to your Lord and draw near;
for you may well traverse the distance of separation from Him.

وَإِذَا ذَوَتْ شَمْسُ النَّهَارِ فَلَا تَدَعْ *** شَمْسَ الهِدَايَةِ عَنْكَ يَوْمًا تَذْوِي
And when the sun of day sets,
do not let the sun of guidance ever set from you.

رَمَضَانُ مَوْسِمُ طَاعَةٍ نَفَحَاتُهُ *** بالسَّعْدِ جَاءَتْ، مَا لَهَا مِنْ صِنْوِ
Ramadan is a season of obedience, its fragrance has come
with happiness, and it has no equal.

شَهْرٌ تَجَلَّىٰ اللهُ فِيهِ بِرَحْمَةٍ *** يُؤْوِي إِلَيْهِ مَنْ إِلَيْهِ يَأْوِي
A month in which Allah reveals Himself with mercy,
offering refuge to all who turn to Him.

شَهْرٌ بِهِ الأَنْوَارُ فَاضَتْ وَالهُدَىٰ *** فَالحُسْنُ وَالإِحْسَانُ مِنْهُ يُرْوِي
A month in which the lights have overflowed, and guidance,
goodness and kindness from it are bestowed.

شَهْرٌ بِمَغْفِرَةِ الإِلَٰهِ تَضَاءَلَتْ *** فِيهِ الذُّنُوبُ وَقَدْ بَدَتْ فِي مَحْوِ
A month in which, by the forgiveness of the Almighty,
sins have diminished and been erased.

يَا غَافِرَ الذَّنْبِ العَظِيمِ بِفَضْلِهِ *** اِجْعَلْ ذُنُوبِي فِي الجَزَا كَالسَّهْوِ
O Forgiver of great sins, by Your grace,
make my sins in Your reckoning like a mere oversight.

يَا مُكْرِمَ المُسْتَرْفِدِينَ إِذَا أَتَوْا *** بِبِضَاعَةٍ مُزْجَاةٍ اقْبَلْ شَدْوِي
O Honourer of those who ask for a reprieve, when they come
with a meagre fare, accept my plea.

قَصَّرْتُ عَنْ شَأْوِ العُلا وَحَبَوْتُ فِي *** طَلَبِ الهُدَىٰ مُتَبَاطِئًا فِي حَبْوِي
I fell short of the loftiest heights and lagged behind in
seeking guidance, slow in my pursuit.

حَسْبِي مِنَ الأَعْمَالِ أَنِّي وَاقِفٌ *** فِي بَابِ عَفْوِكَ لَمْ أَزَلْ فِي رَهْوِ
My only claim to good deeds is that I stand
at the gate of Your forgiveness, ever in the hope of Your mercy.

فَاقْبَلْ دُعَائِي وَاسْتَجِبْهُ تَكَرُّمًا *** وَاسْتُرْ بِعَفْوِكَ مَا بَدَا مِنْ هَفْوِي
So accept my supplication and graciously answer it,
and with Your forgiveness cover what has appeared of my slip.

وَاصْرِفْ بِفَضْلِكَ عَنْ عِبَادِكَ كُلَّ مَا *** قَدْ مَسَّهُمْ مِنْ كُلِّ كَرْبٍ يَكْوِي
And by Your grace, turn away from Your servants all that
has befallen them of every burning distress.

وَارْفَعْ بِرَحْمَتِكَ البَلَاءَ جَمِيعَهُ *** وَالبَأْسَ وَالضَّرَّاءَ عَنَّا فَاِزْوِ
And by Your mercy, lift all calamity,
and hardship and adversity from us turn away

30.
وَامْنُنْ عَلَيْنَا بِالقَبُولِ وَبِالرِّضَا *** فَرِضَاكَ كَنْزٌ كُلَّ خَيْرٍ يَحْوِي
30. And bestow upon us acceptance and Your pleasure;
For Your pleasure is the treasury of all good.
