Imam al-Tahawi: The doctrine of Ahl al-Sunnah

´Aqida Tahawiyya - Text and Commentaries
By Imam Abu Ja`far al-Tahawi (d. 321 H.)

Imam Abu Ja`far al-Tahawi (239-321) can be said to represent the creed of both Ash`aris and Maturidis, especially the latter, as he was also an Imam of the Hanafi madhhab. His Statement of Islamic Doctrine, commonly known as the `Aqida Tahawiyya, is representative of the viewpoint of Ahl al-Sunna wa al-Jama`a, and has long been the most widely acclaimed, and indeed indispensable, reference work on Muslim beliefs.

    Presentation

Presentation of the book from greenmountainschool.org

One cannot overestimate the value of Imam Ibn ‘Ata’Illah, may Allah be pleased with him, in preserving the teachings of the Shadhdhuliyyah, since he was the first to write them down. Both Imam Abu’l-Hasan ash-Shadhdhuli and his successor Imam Abu’l ‘Abbas al-Mursi, may Allah be pleased with them, never wrote any books on the Path. When asked why, Abu’l-Hasan replied, “My companions are my books.” Be that as it may, the teachings would not have survived down to this day as they have if Allah had not inspired Ibn ‘Ata’Illah to put them into written form.

One of the main reasons why this specific book is so fundamental is that it deals with a cardinal doctrine of the Shadhdhuli teaching, namely, the ceasing of self-direction and management in favour of choosing the management and direction of Allah (isqat at-tadbir). A major subject, to which actually half the book is devoted, is rizq, or provision and daily sustenance.

Ibn ‘Ata’Illah deals with the proper approach to acquiring one’s daily provision, the proper manners of withholding it and spending it, and most importantly, how and why one should not waste one’s energy in anxiety over it. In this respect, the Way of the Shadhdhuliyyah, unlike some of the other ways of Sufism, does not call for a life of begging and mendicancy, but rather teaches its adherents to live a life of intense contemplation in the midst of the worldly means of livelihood. In other words, ‘being in the world but not of the world.’ And the importance of this book can also be seen in the method it teaches the reader of how to apply this advice.

    The Author

About the author and his sources

The author, Ibn al-Sabbagh, was writing a little more than six decades after the death of Imam Abul Hasan al-Shadhili. He received his information from the master’s disciples in Tunisia and Egypt, and from their companions and disciples. In his endeavor to record narrations of sayings and supplications of Imam Abul Hasan, he made efforts to meet anyone who might be acquainted with them. He says:

“Some I received directly in Tunis from the righteous Shaykh Abu ale`Azai’m Abu Madi ibn Sultan, pupil and servant of Abu al-Hasan. Some of them I secured in the eastern lands, of Abu ‘Abd Allah Muhammad, called Sharaf al-Din, son of Yaqut al-Habashi. Some of them I received from still other devotees of the Sufi Path of our shaykh and from companions of his companions from among the people of the East and the West, until – ”

there was brought together in my possession material the hearing of which is a source of delight, and the collection of which is something rare.

    Chapters

    About the book

He continues: “I have divided it into five chapters.

  • Chapter 1 concerns his noble lineage, his origin, his receiving instruction in the Way and authority from his teacher, his travels from the Maghrib (Morocco) to the Province of Ifriqiya (Tunis) and to the land of the East (Egypt), and his attainment there to the rank of Khalifa and Qutb.
  • Chapter 2 concerns his correspondence with his disciples in the Province of Ifriqiya.
  • Chapter 3 contains an account of his supplications (da´awat), his devotional recitations (adhkar), and his prayers or orientation (tawajjuhat).
  • Chapter 4 treats his opinions, his teaching on sufism and the inner reality (haqiqa) of the faith, and his injunctions upon his companions.
  • Chapter 5 speaks of his death and his prior appointment of my master Abu al-`Abbas al-Mursi as his successor, of whom I shall recall some splendid anecdotes.

I have entitled the work Durrat al-asrar wa tuhfat al-abrar [The Pearl of Mysteries and the Treasure of the Righteous], concerning the states and stations, extraordinary powers and divine gifts, supplications and devotional recitations that have been attributed to our master, the shaykh, the saint, the gnostic, the one with true knowledge, the trustworthy, the Qutb, the Ghawth, Abu al-Hasan ‘Ali, in order that its appellation may be in accord with the work indicated by the name and conformable to its significance.

From God, I hope for approval and the attainment of the object of my expectations, because He is the preserver from error in narration and the One who brings felicity by His help in lucidity of expression. There is no Lord at all other then He, and no good except His. ”

There is, likewise, internal evidence that the author borrowed much from the Lata’if al-minan of Ibn ‘Ata’ Allah as-Sakandarani – may Allah be pleased with them all.

The author divides his book into five chapters.
Chapter 1 recounts the story of al-Shadhili’s career.
Chapter 2 reveals correspondence with his disciples.
Chapter 3 contains litanies and prayers attributed to al-Shadhili.
Chapter 4 the longest, is composed of the master’s teachings that resemble, in general, those of early Muslim mystics—for example, al-Qushayri.
Chapter 5 indicates al-Shadhili’s death, and relates many deeds and teachings of his Epyptian successor, Abu al-`Abbas al-Mursi.

    Commentaries

    Commentaries:
In 893/1488, Zakariya al-Ansari, who had an ijaza, for teaching the Risala that went back to Abu’l-Mahasin ‘Abd al-Wahid ar-Ruyani, a pupil of al-Qushayri, wrote a commentary on difficult or obscure terms and passages of the Risala entitled Ahkam ad-Dalala ‘ala Tahrir ar-Risala. Al-Ansari’s work was greatly expanded in 1271/1854 by Mustafa Muhammad al-‘Arusi (an adherent of the Arusi branch of the Shadhili order) with his Nata’ij al-Afkar fi Bayan Ma’ani Sharh ar-Risala al-Qushayriya. Two other commentaries in Arabic remain in manuscript: Sadid ad-Din Abu Muhammad al-Lakhmi’s ad-Dalala ‘ala Fawa’id ar-Risala, completed in 638/1240, and one by the celebrated Herati scholar, Mulla ‘Ali al-Qari’ (d. 1014/1605). There is also a partial commentary in Persian by Sayyid Muhammad Gisudaraz (d. 825/1422), the well-known Indian Chishti; he criticizes al-Qushayri in several connections. Covenant 2

Encouragement to Act in Accordance with the Muhammadan SunnaTransl. Abdul Aziz Suraqah

A general covenant has been taken from us by Allah’s Messenger (Allah bless him and grant him peace) that we follow the Muhammadan Sunna in all of our statements, actions, and beliefs. So if there is a practice for which we do not know a supporting proof in the Book [the Quran], the Sunna, scholarly consensus [ijma’], or analogical deduction [qiyas], we refrain from practicing it and wait until we give it further consideration. If it has been deemed positive by some scholars, we seek the permission of Allah’s Messenger (Allah bless him and grant him peace) in it and only then do we act upon it—out of propriety [adab] for those scholars. This is because of our fear of innovating [something] within the purified law [Shariah], which would result in us being among the leaders of misguidance. (more…)

    eş-ŞEMÂİLÜ’n-NEBEVİYYE

    Tirmizî’nin (ö. 279/892) Resûl-i Ekrem’in şemâiline dair eseri.

Info

    Publishing info:
"In the Shade of the Levant” is a collection of thirty-one poems on Syria and the Syrian people; they were written over the span of thirty-five years between 1980-2015. As a Syrian living in Syria and then having to leave Syria, Shaykh Muhammad Al-Yaqoubi describes his country, how it was and how it is, making his words a vessel not only to his own feelings, but to the feelings of the Syrian people and their on-going suffering under the Assad regime for forty years. The poems of “In the Shade of the Levant” present a series of unique and original sketches that trace the illuminated and radiant past of Syria and its capital Damascus through to the present state of discord in sharp contrast as witnessed and experienced in the author’s own lifetime.

In each of the twenty-eight poems dedicated to Syria, Shaykh Muhammad Al-Yaqoubi, a Syrian scholar raised in one of the foremost households of knowledge, piety, and poetic brilliance in the historic city of Damascus, transports the reader through the passage of time in words, describing, praising and eulogizing the virtues and glories of the Syrian people to the level that stirs yearning for it in its most critical period. "In the Shade of the Levant" is guaranteed to enchant the reader and mesmerize his or her mind. It will bring Syria to you, making you feel its cool breeze from the old spring days and the pain its people endure today.

This second edition of the book comes after the heinous attacks that ISIS perpetrated in Egypt, Lebanon, Turkey, France, the USA and Indonesia. These attacks, which must be condemned by Muslim scholars and preachers around the world, are another testimony that, by killing women, children, and civilians, ISIS betrayed Islam, betrayed the Holy Quran, and betrayed the teachings of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).

After the overwhelming response to the first edition, the author felt the need for a second edition that quenches the thirst of the readers with more details. He penned this second edition to further elaborate on many important topics, such as the prohibition of burning human beings, the abolition of slavery, and Islam’s position towards minorities.

New subjects are also tackled, such as the invalidity of excommunicating Muslim rulers for not applying certain aspects of Shari’ah, Islam’s position towards democracy, and the prohibition of destroying pre-Islamic monuments and sacred sites. Several other topics benefitted from more rigorous proofs, especially the section confirming that ISIS criminals have left the fold of Islam and are no longer Muslims.

The Islamic State in Syria and Iraq (ISIS) constitutes the most serious threat Islam has ever faced. To justify its horrible crimes and appeal to Muslims around the world, ISIS has based its ideology on a superficial and literalist approach to the Sacred Texts of Islam – the Holy Qur’an and the Prophetic Tradition. ISIS manipulates religion to brainwash angry young Muslims, who have little knowledge of Islamic theology and jurisprudence. Therefore, the Muslim scholars are obliged to respond with a counter-narrative that elucidates the reality of Islam and its commitment to tolerance. There exists a plethora of proofs that demonstrates ISIS’ actions do not represent Sunni Islam and its claims are based on clear fallacies. The author, Shaykh Muhammad Al-Yaqoubi, a renowned scholar and one of the 500 most influential Muslims in the world today, presents in this invaluable book a thorough refutation of ISIS’ beliefs and crimes. Providing authentic quotes that destroy the allegations of ISIS, Shaykh Al-Yaqoubi reaches the conclusion that this group does not represent Islam, its declaration of a caliphate is invalid, and fighting it is an obligation upon Muslims.

    AL-BAYQOUNIYYA

Begin I do with praise, and prayers and salutations
On Muḥammad the Noble Prophet, the finest ever commissioned

So what follows are a number, of the ḥadīth divisions
And all of them do come, with their definitions

The first of them is Sound,1 and that is neither broken
in its chain, nor does it contradict or have a hidden failing

One who is upright and precise, narrates from his like
Reliable in his precision, as well as his transmission

The tradition that is Fair,2 is one whose routes are known
Its narrators not as famous, as the Sound have shown

And all that falls, below the rank, of the Fair tradition
Weak3 it is, falling short, with many subdivisions.

Attributed to the Prophet, is the tradition that is Raised4
While falling on the Successor, Broken5 is it phrased

The tradition that is Supported,6 its chain is indeed unbroken
Intact from its last narrator, to the One who has been Chosen

And whatsoever is connected, by the hearing of all who narrated
Through the one who has been Chosen, the term is then Connected7

Linked8 is the tradition, that does come with a story
As in the saying, “By God it was the lad who did inform me”

Likewise: “He told me as he was standing”
Or, “And after he told me he was smiling”

Strengthened9 is the narration, related by two or three
Popular10 is the one, related by more than three

Like “from Saʿīd from Karam,” the Muʿanʿan is proclaimed
The Obscure11 contains a person, who has not been named

Those whose men are few, are indeed Uplifted12
Opposed to those the ones, which are deemed Descended13

And that which you related, to the Companions of the Prophet
From their speech and from their actions, the term is then Suspended14

Sent15 is the tradition, the Companion is omitted
And say, Strange16 is the one, that only one related

And each report that does fall short, in its full connection
Its chain is really lacking, Severed17 in its union

Problematic18 is the one, from which two are fallen
And that which comes Concealed,19 its types are two in version

The first of these is by, dropping the teacher and
relating from above him, using terms like “from” and “that”

The second does arise, not by dropping, but when you do describe
Those traits of his by which he is not recognized

The one by which the trusted contradicts the greater number
Anomalous20 it is, while the Switched21 are two in number

The first: a switch within the chain, one person for another
But the flipping of the chain to another text, that is the other

And Singular22 is the tradition confined to a trustworthy person

To a group or to a region, by way of one narration
And whatever contains a flaw, subtle or obscure
Is then deemed Defective,23 with them known for sure

Those that do contain, variance in their text or chain
Confounded24 are they named, by the masters of this game

And those Interjections25 into the traditions, are what have come to us
From the words of the narrators, in the chains continuous

And what a peer narrates on the authority of his brother,
Adorned26 it is, so know it well, and by it gain your honor

Agreeing with another, in wording and in script, is the Congruous27
The flip of this, as we have mentioned, is termed Incongruous28

The Common29 one agrees, only in its script
Opposed to it is Discordant,30 so be wary of a slip

Detested31 is the tradition, arising from the single person
Whose vindication cannot strengthen the sole narration

The tradition is Discarded32 that a single one related
Whose weakness is agreed, which is then rejected

And the lie, concocted and contrived
On the Prophet, is Fabricated33 and connived

And it has come, like a pearl, veiled from show
Ode of Bayqūnī, have I named it so

By four beyond thirty thus have come
their lines in sum, with grace they’re done.

The Ode of Bayqūnīyyah is a celebrated primer of ḥadīth terminology that represents the entry of a student of knowledge into the very broad discipline of ḥadīth sciences. Authored by ʿUmar b. Muḥammad b. Futūḥ al-Bayqūnī [lived circa 1080H/1669CE], a Shāfiʿī scholar of Damascus about whom very little is known, it comprises 34 couplets of poetry covering exactly 34 types of ḥadīth. Upon completion of its study and receiving an ijāzah in this text going back to the author, I am pleased to present an original verse translation into English for the first time. Please note that this is a non-traditional, flowing translation and not a commentary, and should be studied with the aid of a teacher or a detailed commentary.

    berättaren fram till den Utvalde (Profeten), utan att något saknas;
