from the “Towards Ihsan” event in Barking, UK, 28th June 2026
Through gratitude, gifts increase and endure.
So give thanks to it if it is extra abundance that you seek.
For Allah has indeed promised increase by His saying,
If you are grateful, and the Lord is most generous.[1]
The favours of the Lord are immense, and His giving
cannot be bounded by counting nor by estimation.
And for that reason, gratitude became a duty,
in religion and faith, and it is its very core.
5. Blessed is the one who thanks the Overseer sincerely,
for gratitude is ingrained in his nature.[2]
Thus his tongue, his heart and deeds,
have pulled out of him gratitude that knows no reduction. [3]
Gratitude is the description of the Prophets, so how excellent
a description, so noble, rare and magnificent.
With it the Lord described His intimate friend, His Prophet
Ibrahim alayhi salam, in the Qur’an and he was forbearing.[4]
And the grateful ones among creation are few,
the All-Knowing has praised them in the Qur’an. [5]
10. And for them is an abundant reward from their Lord.
They were singled out for it, and that recompense is everlasting. [6]
And gratitude is not merely a speech that has been embellished,
just for a single day, which the tongue alone takes charge of.
The gratitude of the tongue is a beginning, but it,
if not accompanied by humility, is worthless.[7]
Gratitude is an acknowledgement to your Lord that He
is a Lord most generous, bestowing and magnificent.
Gratitude is faith that His existence
is an absolute truth, certain, eternal and timeless.
15. Gratitude is realising that you are His servant,
and to Him throughout all time a devoted attendant.
And Allah has no need for the gratitude of His servants,
for He is the self-sufficient by His essence, the sustainer of all.
Gratitude consists of acts of obedience to Him and worship,
which you uphold before Him throughout the length of life.
And therefore Allah in His revelation
said, (Work in gratitude) — so where do you intend to turn? [8]
The gratitude of the eyes is that you can’t see the faults
of your brother, for the true friend is deeply secretive.
20. And gratitude with the ears is that you do not listen to
obscenity that is spoken or backbited.
Gratitude of the eyes is that you can see the fault of your brother, for the true friend is deeply secretive.
And gratitude with the ears is that you do not listen to obscenity that is spoken or backbiting and that you walk away.
Gratitude of the feet is that you are heading toward a mosque
by walking and that you desire to stay within it.
The gratitude of the heart is witnessing your Lord always,
for the heart from the impact of His Majesty is utterly humbled.
By gratitude gifts are bound, since it is through it
they remain, and that which was absent and missing is captured.
Beware of forgetting the Lord upon receiving a blessing,
that is a corrupt and blameworthy deed.
25. Do not make immense blessings a means
by which you disobey the Lord while acting wrongfully.
And gratitude according to the Gnostics has degrees,
attained by the people of intellect and deep understanding.
It consists of realities and spiritual knowledge that are to them
the spiritual tastes and flavours of a people who have come to know.
The lowest degree of His gratitude is that you do not see
any favours from the creation that you establish as truly theirs.
Rather, everything that comes to you from them is a blessing
from Him and is inscribed in the Book.
30. So read, may you be guided, (And whatever blessing you have is from Allah)
A truth may manifest over which there are no clouds.[9]
And (Allah is the Creator of all things), so beware of
the hidden association, for it is indeed disastrous.[10]
Beware of being veiled by the creation, for they are nothing
but intermediaries possessing no ultimate authority.
Yet thank a brother who has done you a favour,
for if you refuse to show gratitude, you are at fault.
And lengthen your tongue constantly in gratitude, if
your hands fall short of physical repayment and no blame will be upon you.
35. Whoever is not constantly grateful to people,
then gratitude from him to his Lord is non-existent.
And if you desire to reach the highest station
in gratitude, beyond which there is no further division,
then thank him until you run out of ways
or means of expressing the blessing around which you would hover.
For gratitude, if you look closely, you will find it to be a blessing
from Him initiated, and His giving is all-encompassing.
Since every act of gratitude is itself a blessing and a gift,
in the sea of whose meaning you have begun to swim.
40. So give thanks for gratitude that comes in a continuous chain,
until you are seen enraptured in the name of the All-Grateful.
And you are seen effaced before Him from every expression of thanks,
while gratitude from you piles up towards the sky.
Thus you become the pole of gratitude among mankind,
and with you the treasure of gratitude is sealed.
For that reason, the Gnostics said in truth,
gratitude is an incapacity that resides within the servants. [11[Comment]
And gratitude, shukr, is made of three letters,
whose secrets no written record has contained.
Comment: The reality of shukr is your feeling of inability to do enough shukr, because you can witness at that moment the immense grace of Allah SWT upon you, and then you see that you cannot be thankful enough. You’ve done every way of thanks, but how would you thank Allah SWT when the bounties are just falling more and more and more and more? In that moment, your state becomes shukr. All of your states become shukr. Your being becomes shukr.
