In response to two poems by
Abu al-Qasim al-Suhayli: “O you who see and hear what is in the heart” and
Abu Dhu’ayb al-Hadhali: “Are you distressed by death and its pain”?
The first letter of the each line, when read vertically, forms the phrase of the Ayah
in Sura Ghafir (40:60): ادْعُونِي أَسْتَجِبْ لَكُمْ﴾﴿
أَمِنَ التَّجَافِي وَالنَّوى تَتَوَجَّعُ *** أَمْ مِن ذُنُوبِ قَدْ دَهَتْ تَتَفَجَّعُ
are you distressed by rejection and separation?
or are you tormented by sins from the past?
دَعْ ذَا وَلَا تَيْأَسُ فَرَبُّكَ غَافِرُ *** لِلذَّنْبِ ، وَالإِحْسَانُ مِنْهُ أَوْسَعُ
Leave it be and do not despair, for your Lord is forgiving
of sin, and His benevolence is boundless.
عَلِمَ المُهَيْمِنُ ضَعْفَنا فَأَرَاحَنَا *** بِالعَفْوِ يَشْمَلُ مَنْ أَتَى يَتَشَقَّعُ
The Protecting Lord knows our weakness, so He comforted us
by extending forgiveness to all who come pleading for it.
وَأَجَابَ مَنْ قَدْ جَاءَهُ مُسْتَغْفِرًا *** وأتاه في جُنْحِ الدُّجَى يَتَضَرَّعُ
He responds to those who come to seek His forgiveness,
who approach Him begging with humility in the darkness of night.
نَادِ الإِلهَ كما تَشَاءُ وَنَاجِهِ *** فَاللَّهُ يَعْلَمُ مَا تُسِرُّ وَيَسْمَعُ
Call upon God as you wish, and lament to Him,
for Allah knows what you conceal and hears you.
يَا رَاحِمَ الضُّعَفَاءِ يَا رَبَّ الوَرَى *** مَا لِي سِوَى عَلْياكَ بَابٌ أَقْرَعُ
O You Who are Merciful to the weak, O Lord of mankind
I have no door but that of Your Highness to knock at
إِنِّي أَتَيْتُكَ ضَارِعًا مُسْتَغْفِرًا *** أَرْجُو نَدَاكَ وَقَدْ أَقَضَّ المَضْجَعُ
I come to You dejected, begging for forgiveness.
I hope for Your magnanimity, my bed is rejecting me.
سَلَّمْتُ بَيْنَ يَدَيْكَ أَمْرِي عَالِمًا *** أَنَّ التَّذَلُّلَ عِنْدَ بَابِكَ أَنْفَعُ
I surrender myself into Your hands, knowing
that standing in humily at Your door is most beneficial.
تَاللَّهِ إِنِّي مُؤْمِنُ بِكَ لَمْ أَحُلْ *** يَوْمًا وَحُبُّكَ فِي الحَشَا يَتَرَعْرَعُ
By Allay, I believe in You. I do not spend
a day, but that love for You increases in my heart.
جَزِعَ المُسِيءُ مِنَ الذُّنُوبِ وَقَدْ أَتَى *** كَأْسَ النَّدَامَةِ وَالأَسَى يَتَجَرَّعُ
The sinner was worried about his sins and came
to drink the cup of remorse and regret in large sips.
بَسَطَ اليَدَيْنِ إِلَيْكَ يَسْأَلُ خَاضِعًا *** يَدْعُوكَ فِيمَا قَدْ أَهَمَّ وَيَخْشَعُ
He extends both his hands to You, asking submissively,
invoking You humbly about his concern.
لَم يَبْقَ مِنْ سُؤْلٍ لَهُ إِلَّا الرِِّضَا *** والعَفْوُ عَمَّا قَدْ يَقُولُ وَيَصْنَعُ
No other request he has but for You to be pleased
and to forgive what he says and does.
كُلُّ المَسَاوِئِ فِي رِِضَاكَ مَحَاسِنُ *** إِنَّ البَلاءَ بِدَعْوَةٍ يُسْتَدْفَعُ
All misdeeds are made good when You are pleased.
And we seek by prayer to repel affliction .
مَنْ ذَاقَ لَذَّةَ قَوْلِهِ ادْعُونِي دَعَا *** رَبَّ العِبَادِ وَقَلْبُهُ يَتَصَدَّعُ
Whoever has tasted the sweetness of his words, “Call upon me,” calls
the Lord of all servants with a broken heart.

Acaso del abandono y del destino sufres
o de los pecados que han sucedido te atormentas
Déjalo y no desesperes pues tu Señor es Perdonador
del pecado y Su Benevolencia es amplia
Conoce El Protector nuestra debilidad y nos tranquilizó con Su perdón,
que alcanza todo aquel que ha venido pidiendo intercesión.
Respondió a quien le fue pidiendo perdón
y fue a él en la oscuridad suplicando
Llama al Señor como quieras y confía en Él
pues Allah conoce lo que ocultas y escucha
Oh Misericordioso con los débiles, Oh Señor de la humanidad
no poseo excepto Tu Grandeza como puerta a la que llamar
He venido a Ti débil pidiendo perdón
suplico, tu llamada siendo difícil el dormir
He entregado mi asunto a tus manos sabiendo
que la humillación ante tus puertas es más beneficioso
Por Allah que soy creyente y no me he apartado
nunca y Tu amor crece en el corazón
Lamenta el pecador sus pecados
bebiendo de la copa del arrepentido y la angustia
Extendió su mano hacia Ti suplicando
sumisamente por aquello que le preocupa
Sin quedarle nada más por lo que suplicar excepto
por la complacencia y el perdón en sus dichos y actos.
Todas las calamidades ante tu complacencia son méritos
la tribulación con la súplica es apartada
Quien saborea la dulzura de Su dicho ﴾Invocadme﴿
su corazón se rompa con la súplica
